Had a blast fishing this weekend in Duck NC. Caught a nice black drum on a sandworm/lugworm, and the dogfish on a sand flea. Then got a couple whiting on sand worms/fleas. By far the most wild catch(almost) was a king mackerel on a whole sandworm maybe 10-15 yards into the surf. I got a nice look at it right before it cut 45lb mono leader. Probably about 24-28”, I’m not a local but seemed too big and lacked spots/yellow that I’ve seen on Spanish in videos.
If anyone plans on fishing there soon, I highly recommend Bobs bait and tackle. They set me up right and are really nice dudes. I dropped my BG4000 in the surf and had it totally locked up, they got it working for me within 24hr. With regard to fishing/bait, I didn’t have much luck with cut mullet, but I’d say get a thing of sandworms and then dig for sand fleas. The sand fleas are all over the surf and I was able to catch plenty with just my hands. I also had way better luck using a pompano rig with floats than a fishfinder rig or pompano without floats. The first day blues were busting on the surface but I didn’t see any the rest of the trip.
I understand this is getting a bit rambly, but I’m now looking for some advice. I was struggling to handle some of these fish when I landed them. Would it be best to just get a net? I still feel like I’d have to set them down in the sand(while still in the net) to get the hook out which I know is best to avoid. Also, while my BG is now usable, it’s still pretty grinds compared to how it was prior to dropping it. Is there anyway to fix this or do I just have to live with this?
Thanks for the help and hopefully I was able to provide a bit of insight from my experience. Tight lines!
