When I first started many suggested a 12ft rod and a big pit reel. That's what I first got and it's way to big for most American carp fishing. There is no need to cast that far and most spots are just a foot path down to the water. I've also lost several fish mucking around adjusting the drag all the time on the big pit reel. The Shimano bait runner is set it and forget it. I also like the 10ft pole because it cast plenty far enough and is much more manageable. I went with 2.75 TC and it seems to be just right for this setup. Now I have two of these shimano/sonik setups and will likely not be using the "big rig" much on my adventures. I guess I have a spomb rod if needed.
