When you get to a mountain/alpine lake and there is absolutely no surface activity or bugs, no rising, and calm water surface, what’s your general game pattern or approach?

I kinda just default to heavy stripped Woolley buggers and/or bead head nymphs and hunt around but It feels very random and hit or miss. This scenario assumes you know that there ARE trout living in the lake.

Sometimes it does work though! (Had to brag)

  1. Most of what a trout eats is not at the surface. Sight fish with a small bugger. I have, over the years, caught many more fish subsurface in alpine lakes.

  2. Guide’s choice bead head hare’s ear nymph. Slow stripped or under a dry fly about 2-4 feet deep.
