I see most guys running M18s but I have all Dewalt. This is the DCD996 with a 5ah XR battery. Seems like a ton of torque but I kicks out power if any pressure is applied on the 8” auger. Thought maybe the 8” would be too much but I see them everywhere.

Any thoughts or recommendations on a better DeWalt drill?

  1. I ran a 996 with a pistol but no problem. I would guess your speed is too high or blades are dull

  2. Do the new dewalts have an anti kick feature to prevent it from twisting your arm off? Maybe that’s what’s stopping it. When it sense the drill twisting it kicks out? I know the new Milwaukee ones have it. Just have to brace the drill against my leg or hip and then it chews through the ice like crazy.

  3. I’d certainly think that since my HF Hercules Hammer drill chews through ice then the 996 should have zero problems. It’s probably either your speed setting or the auger itself.

  4. Near as I can tell it has about 840 in-lbs of torque which is right on the edge for an 8″ hole. The m18 fuel drill people use has 1400 in-lbs of torque.

The standard recommendation is at least 100 in-lbs per inch. So you’re right at the threshold.

You want it on drill setting, not screw, not hammer. You also want it on the lowest speed setting.

  5. Looks like in the photo you have it on drill setting 11, so if it has too much resistance it’ll chatter and won’t spin the bit. Put it on the drill bit icon and it’ll work fine. Don’t use the hammer icon. And speed setting should be on 1 not 2.
