Learned a hard lesson the other night burbot fishing. Wind picked up and my buddies tent tried to fly away. In my haste, I rushed out to assist him (I always throw snow around the outside of my tent) and during this time the wind picked up even more and my tent went for a ride. Whiteout conditions in the dark made for a rough chase. I ran/walked for around 2km to where the river flows in and the tent tracks disappeared. I couldn't see more than 5ft infront of me, so I had to give up for my saftey (it's only a tent). On my walk back, no more than 5-10 min and my tracks disappeared (good thing I have gps maps on my phone).
However, I'm very stubborn and hate losing things. I went back the next day for retrieval. To my amazement, I could see it with binoculars from the rec site. After bringing and riding the snowmobile about half way, I had to walk the rest along the side of the river. After about an hour trek bushwacking, I made it to my tent (not sure what shape I was going to find it in). To my amazement again, it was perfectly fine, with no rips tears or broken poles.
Moral of the story, this was my worst hardwater fishing experience. I will always be putting minimum of 1 ice peg in everytime I go out no matter the current weather conditions. Always plan for the worst and know when to give up and try again in more favorable conditions.
Stay safe everyone and learn from my mistake.
