  1. Your gear is fine. Taken care of, it may outlive you. The fish you catch using it is dependent much more on the person holding the rod than the rod itself. But a 9’ 8wt is what I would throw for chinook or giant catfish.

  2. Nice (but dated) reel. Cheaper (but good value) rod. On an 8wt you can catch salmon and steelhead. It would be overpowered for small-medium trout, Let r rip

    ….sometimes it’s the hunter…not the arrow.

I have a beat up POS Pfluger medalist fly reel, and honestly you should see the hot chrome kings I’ve landed with it.

And I **** hate**** having the heart attack every time my loop speed runner or tibor reel chunks on a rock.

    Hate it!

Something to think about esp. If you’re newer to the game.

  4. Nothing wrong with that gear at all… Learn it, use it! It’s more than capable and will handle big Salmon and Steelhead.

I have that rod, in 6wt, and an inexpensive TFO reel for my streamer rod and works perfectly. I did update to a nice SA sinking tip line. Good luck and have fun!
