Plugged in my flipover battery charger and attached the alligator clips to the battery. Usually I would leave it to charge, sometimes overnight. Today I remained in the room and saw smoke coming from the wiring between the plug and alligator clips. I tried pulling the wiring in an effort to pull the alligator clips from the battery terminals but the insulation was melted and stuck to the fingers of my left hand. I managed to pull the plug out of the receptacle with my right hand. Received burns to my fingers. Battery is still working. Thank goodness I didn’t leave the room or leave the house. I could have lost my house and two dogs. I’ll never again leave a battery charging when I’m not home.

Your next charger should have an inline fuse. Some come with an SAE pigtail with ring terminals. Snip them, strip, and crimp on blade/quick connect terminals.
