I’m having a hard time believing it was an old hole. Our hut has been up since January, no one else has been fishing close to us. It’s not a perfect circle, inside there are frozen ledges (you can kind of see what I mean at the top left part of the hole). We’ve been fishing in this exact spot for eight years and have never had something like this pop up so I don’t think there is a natural spring. I didn’t stay close to it long enough to do much measuring but I was told that there was ice underneath (about eight inches down) but I’m questioning if that person was right because I sunk all the way to my knee when I stepped in it. There was no ice breaking or anything, it was covered by snow and slush so I didn’t see it.

Everywhere we drilled holes there was over 20inches of ice. We had to put an extender on our auger even! It’s been sub freezing since the beginning of December so I don’t think it could be from thawing. It didn’t really look like a pressure crack but maybe? There’s so much snow right now it’s impossible to see them. I tried to clear some snow to figure it out but there was too much slush.
