I just got my 30 year old original battenkill back from Orvis repair. I am so excited as I have not fished this reel in years. As I inspected the work they did to the reel I noticed that they appear to have gone somewhat overboard with the grease. There is enough grease piled up on one of the pawls that it is rubbing grease on the back of the spool and potentially onto the backing and the line. My gut is telling me to remove the excess grease, especially the stuff rubbing into the back of the spool. Before I did anything I wanted to see what this sub thought. Thanks!

Not an expert but I would definitely wipe a lot of that off
Why don’t you call Orvis, who just repaired your reel?
I’d keep it on. As you use the reel, the grease will disperse, breakdown, and then be replenished from that glob of grease.
