Is a live decoy always better than a fake one when spearing for pike?

  1. I typically ran both and it was mixed, sometimes they prefer live others fake. Small ones wild always hammer live decoys, the big girls always came in slower and checked them out

Not always. I don’t like paying for them or keeping them alive, so I only run artificial. They usually check them out, but don’t always commit. If the fish are in a feeding mood, they work about the same.

The live ones do the work for you, so the anxiety of “spooking” a fish that you think is close by because you decide to pull up on the string is gone.

Red and white mini northern was my favorite, maybe with a spoon on the end. But biggest pikes I’ve seen were drawn in with a live sucker. Just make sure to get a harness and don’t poke them.

Btw, that looks like an awesome spot – clear water, some weeds, looks to be perfect. What’s the depth?

50/50 just depends on the day. Heck, my red and white striped golf ball spinner outperforms a live sucker some days.
