So I have a technique question. I understand that this isn’t strictly surf fishing, but I think you guys can solve this issues

I was fishing off of a pier. I hooked something on a piece of squid right off the bottom on a high low rig. Suddenly I saw the bite, took the rod out of the rod holder, and started reeling. It was taking A LOT of drag, I was worried I’d get spooled. So I tightened the drag (too quickly and too much I think), and then the fish popped off. 20 lb braid, 20 lb mono leader. Nothing failed except for the hook straightening out. That seems crazy to me that the hook fails before cheap 20 lb mono, or even the old uni knot attaching the hook to the high low rig.

Any suggestions on how I could’ve prevented this?
