Got out on yak for the first time since my newest son was born a couple months ago. Little 8 mile round trip. Got a new slow pitch set up and went out to a rockfish spot I had found in the winter. California rockfish opened for all depths April 1. Fished in 300-350 feet with a 200g Nomad Gypsy on 30 lb braid with 3 feet of 40lb Fluor leader. Immediately got smoked on the drop and got limits of Vermilion (2). Absolute blast.

That is one ugly fish. But man are they delicious!
If you were out on the water on Saturday, I think I saw you out there in the middle of all the boats. Respect! 🫡
Nice.
I pedal like 2+ miles out to look for a spot to try out slow pitch fishing but then my fishfinder went weird and couldn’t detect bottom after 200 ft (blinking depth number). I am going to have to troubleshoot it next time
I’m still trying to find a comfortable way to slow pitch from the kayak. That long butt section from spj rod kind get in the way in sitting position in kayak. I can’t really rest the butt against my forearm/elbow. Sure I can just turn the rod and just hold it with my hand since it is really light but it is not as comfortable
