Wildlife officials have revealed a milestone fish caught on Lake Michigan.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an angler from Sheboygan caught a 35-inch, 16-pound lake trout in 2023, and while its size is noteworthy, the real story here is its age.
The lake trout was tagged as part of the FWS’ Great Lakes Mass Marking Program, which started in 2010 and aims to enhance fisheries management by tracking the movements and origins of hatchery-raised fish in the Great Lakes.
The coded wire tag indicated the fish hatched in 1984 and was raised at the Iron River National Fish Hatchery and stocked on Sheboygan Reef, within the Lake Michigan Southern Refuge, on July 12, 1985.
