Finally got a chance to test out my new yak and I loved it. Super stable and not as bad to paddle as I thought it would be. My main concern is standing and fishing. I tried a bit and although I was stable and able to cast, it still felt “sketchy”. Is there a trick to it based on feet placement or weight control? Any tips appreciated!

  1. Wide stance, and just practice without any gear on the yak in case you go over or flip till you feel comfortable. I’ve heard it can be good to try and flip your kayak so you learn the limits and just how hard (or easy) it is to flip or fall out of. That old town should be pretty tough to actually completely flip.

    Just time.

Spread your feet more if it’s more comfortable, maybe get a standing/leaning bar like the yakattack command stand.

Use a handle hold strap at first to ease getting up/down. Scupper plugs may help too

For me the shoes I were make a big difference. I like soft flexible soles or bare foot. I feel with boots or tennis shoes you don’t get enough feedback to react for balance.

  5. Take it out empty and roll it over on purpose. Good practice to climb back in and you’ll learn how much lean it actually takes to flip, I bet it’s more than you think.

I’m in the process of making some diy pontoons/stabilizers. Maybe that’s also an option for you.

I’m gonna sacrifice a couple of cheap Styrofoam boogie boards and some scrap lumber. Should level me out pretty good.
