I recently built out a fishing crate for my kayak. I used it last night for the first time. How do ya’ll turn yourself around to get things out? I managed, but it made me a bit nervous that I was going to put the yak off balance. Moving and turning was very slow and deliberate.

You’ll get used to it…fishing kayaks can tip a LONG way before ever flipping over.
You just get used to maintaining balance as you move around.
This spot looks very similar to a lake I kayak in. Is this in Western PA?
You’ll get the hang of it. I went out a handful of times before I was comfortable turning around to get stuff behind me. It’s why I ended up having a bunch of crap in front of me (so I wouldn’t have to turn around)…which got on my nerves the last couple times I went out.
My next trip out, I’ll have a good system to have everything organized behind me, but easy to reach quickly.
Haven’t taken mine out in a while due to shoulder problems, but sit on tops don’t flip you anywhere near as easy as you think they might.
If you can get your legs wet (not cold water or other junk in the water making it unsafe), then what I would do is slip the shoes off if you need to, slide over a hair to your right, rotate legs over the side to the left and into the water, then turn so your legs are 90% or more from where you normally sit.
Swivel at the waist, keep your body within the sides of your yak and you’ll be fine. You could also put different textures on your boxes, like on the part you grab. That way you could just reach back without having to look maybe
