Hello,
I’m currently in Japan and have been tasked with the mission of buying a bait caster for my buddy. I found the shimano metanium fit my buddies checklist pretty well. Size 100, around 12lb line capacity and around 200-300 dollars.

My question is: is anyone able to ID the exact model for this reel? I see that there’s a MGL, HG, and, DC. I don’t know much about bait casters so any help would be appreciated!

  1. It’s a Metanium MGL B 150. Hg would be 7.1 gear ratio. 6.2 is pretty slow, best for crankbaits or chatterbaits

  2. LetsMakeSomeBaits on

Looks to me that is what they call just the “Shimano 20 Metanium right” and I don’t believe the 6.2 gear ratio gets a classification by ratio but others may know otherwise. Usually HG is 7.1 and XG is 8.1.

You can tell if it’s a DC by looking on the side where the breaks are, if it says “SVS Infinity” then it’s not a DC and has a centrifugal brake system. If it’s a DC it should say “Metanium DC” there instead.

Some other specs of these are the MGLIII spool, Magnesium frame, X ship gears, Silent tune, has a degree of saltwater protection but I wouldn’t use mine in the salt, Sealed bearings, Micro module gearing system.

At 66cm per crank this would make a great lightweight Crank and Vib reel, throw it on a mod or mod fast with 8lb Flouro and chuck 15g Cranks and blades. The 76cm p/c HG would be better for Jerks and such and the 86cm p/c XG would be better for finesse.
