Hi’

I hope, this is a good set for beginners! Savage Gear SG4 Finezze Specialist 7-21g rod and SG8 reel.
Yes, I tried many, and the pistolgrip rod with the multicast reel was the most comfortable for me.
What my question is… Can you see the line on my reel? That supposed to be 150m according to the packaging of the line. It was factory sealed, so I doubt that they tampered with it in the shop. But it’s definitely not 150m.
Sooo…. I guess it should be up to the edge. I don’t know why, but it is pretty hard to find 150< meters braided lines in my country. Multicaster stuff is pretty much count as heresy here for some reason.

Braid is very thin in diameter for it’s pound test and that very well may be 150m of braid. What you should do is bulk out the spool with a Monofilament before attaching your braid. And out of curiosity, what country are you in?

I would recommend replacing it. Mono is susceptible to heat and UV damage over time, and that could have been sitting in a hot warehouse for a couple of years.

If it’s your first time using a baitcaster stick with the mono until you’re comfortable using it. Losing a few meters of mono on a bad backlash or tangle isn’t a big deal. Spending an hour or two untangling braid sucks and ends the fishing trip, and if you can’t untangle it, it’s an expensive mistake.

  3. Assuming the model is the same, the SG8 holds 144 yards of 12 lb mono/floro. Braid is roughly 1/3 the size of resin lines per pound test, so if you put 12lb braid on it it would only take roughly 1/3 of the spool. When you wanna use braid on a baitcaster that doesn’t give you specific braid ranges you need to look at the thickness of the recommended mono and find the braid to match. Typically that’s gonna be 30-40lb braid.

I made this mistake with my first baitcaster as well, it really affects your casting and can cause a ton of backlashes and potentially damage your reel. Best thing to do, is get a braid in the recommended thickness and a huge spool of super cheap, super thin mono. The strength of the mono is irrelevant, it’s just to use as backing. If you can’t find braid over 150 yards, that’s no problem since you probably aren’t casting 150 yards anyway, just use the mono to fill the bottom 1/3 of the spool before tying on your braid to fill the rest.
