I’m just getting into fishing as an adult and needed a budget entry level rod to start off with (after I broke my beloved Profishiency Pocket Combo, so convenient) and picked this Rapala Classic up on clearance for 39.99(CAD).
Is it a decent rod/reel? Guessing it’s essentially a no-name with a Rapala stamp on it. I’ve landed a 10lb pike with it, but realized recently it says 8-12lb line on the rod and I’ve got 20lb braid on it with a steel leader (I’m up north so lots of toothy fish). How long can I fish with this before I need to seriously consider upgrading?

My third pic didn’t upload for some reason.
If it works it works
I wish I could get them here in America, they look great and I’d love to try one.
They’re on “clearance” everywhere and have been for the past 2 months when they first hit the stores. That being said, at 40$ per combo, I have to say, they feel and perform much better than priced. I picked up 2 of them as backup and for my kids and wife to use, instead of my more exquisite gear. But I actually enjoy using them too.
The drag on the reel is surprisingly smooth and the rod is surprisingly sensitive with a good backbone. The cork handle finish is lacking finesse and there are visible imperfections although minor and all aesthetic.
My only real complaint is about the wobbly handle but I’m being picky at this price. Recommend to anyone who needs a cheap backup combo or just starting out.
It’s hard – if not impossible – to find ANY reel or ANY decent rod at this price these days. This combo is superior to any cheap Ugly Stick combos in my opinion.
I think they’re nice especially if you get them on sale. Solid price point for what you get
I like the cork handle, I find they tend to get less slimy and dirty then foam handles.
