Hi, I want recommendations for a strong spinning reel, just because I like things.
Don’t get much time to fish these days because the kids get bored after 20 minutes.
Instead, we have a bunch of dock runners and practice casting in the back yard and pool. Even though the kids all have their own spinning, baitcaster, and spin cast combos, they inevitably want to use mine at some point, which is fine, so I typically use either the SLX DC XT or the Sahara.
When the kids are in the pool, they like to be reeled in, this is obviously a lot of weight so I’d like a recommendation for a spinning reel. Want to keep the price under $200, just because the reel will get beat up, dunked in chlorine, and probably left outside.
I know the best tool for the job would be a large saltwater reel but I don’t want something that big or heavy. Right now I’m thinking Stradic or Sustain 2500 that’s being closed out on shimano’s ebay account. I’ve read the complaints about the current stradic but I’m not sure if that’s still an issue or if it was just the early versions.

  1. Small child, figuring 50-80 pounds, more drag because of swimsuits and they’re not fish.

I hate to say, I think you’ll be best served with a low ratio penn senator and a “cod rod” spooled with 50# ande big game.

  2. If it was for you, I’d unequivocally suggest the stradic. But as you describe the intended use and abuse, I have to agree with the others about a penn pursuit or fierce iv being the more sensible option.

Shimano Ultegra 1000. $159. Its the entry into Shimano’s premium spinning reels, and an outstanding value

Ya I wouldn’t buy a stradic to almost deliberately destroy it but that’s just me lol

If you want a reel that can actually hold up to this abuse for even a remote amount of time I’d suggest the tsunami barrier or Shimano spheros SW, both are sealed to varying degrees to limit water ingress

  5. I don’t know if a Sustain or a Stradic is going to fare well to this usage case scenario long-term. I have several Sustain FJs and a Stadic FM and I think they are great reels, but immersion of a not fully sealed reel with tight operating tolerances in corrosive chlorinated water + being left outdoors where they will likely be exposed to dirt/sand getting into them + reeling in children is probably not going to work really well long-term and I think one of the beefy Penns are likely a better choice.
