I ‘m new to surf fishing but am in love with the idea. All my trout spinning gear isn’t up to the task so I bought a conventional 12 foot Ugly Stik and a Shimano Cardiff reel and have been practicing at Doran beach in Sonoma County. I’ve tried Carolina and Texas rigs, fish finder rigs and single and double drop rigs. Pyramids weights (2-3 oz) seem to wash ashore but keep the bait or lure out long enough to experiment with trying to stay in the nearshore and farther trench. I ‘m still experimenting and it is not easy! but I did catch this beautiful shiny jacksmelt. Bit on squid. Too bad I was out of time and could not add it to a spider (Sputnik) sinker. maybe this could have been a Halibut or Striper, or best of all a White Sea bass. Another day perhaps. Cheers

  1. If you don’t mind picking through the bones, jack smelt are actually pretty tasty
