I'm one of the lucky few men whose girlfriend caught a raging case of fish fever and I've been doing my damndest to enable the addiction. I gave her a little 3000 series 6ft spinning combo and she kicked my butt a few times catching striped bass in the river, but she's going to need a much heavier gear if she wants to kick my butt fishing off my boat or a public pier for sharks, halibut, rockfish, sturgeon, and ocean run stripers.
Behold, the BIG spinner. If she's confident with the little spinner, the big one has no learning curve. She can spend more time honing in on the important stuff (baits, rigs, fish behavior, strike detection, fighting big fish, landing big fish). Using big spinning boat combos on trips to the Gulf of Mexico made me a believer in their versatility. Fly line pinfish one minute, drop big jigs for grouper the next.
It consists of; a big older 6000 series Abu Garcia saltwater reel I caught my heaviest surf fish on (it is ingrained with big fish energy, this is crucial for new angler setups), 20# premium mono, and a brand new medium heavy, 1-4oz rated 7ft Daiwa Saltist rod. Both the rod, reel, and color coordination got overwhelming approval by the lady. We can try to master conventional reels later, for now we focus on the important stuff which is hooking hogs and having fun.
