Caught this poor mirror earlier today.

Lead was ejected on the take, carp surfaced almost right away and didn't give much of a fight. I noticed the injury before netting it, had a solid hookset dead center of the bottom lip. Rig I was using is in the pics, spinner with a barbless longshank on a 20 lb fluoro hooklink.

I'm pretty sure the damage was done before I caught it but I'm also fairly new into carp fishing and not 100% confident that I'm not responsible so please help me understand how something like this can happen.

The only hypothesis I have is that it could be braid damage with the distinct slits, maybe someone had tried to force it out of weeds or fought it drag shut?

Sad to see on a beautiful fish like that.
