Hi everyone. Looking to make a new combo. I have two currently, Abu Garcia Max X and a bass pro shops extreme STK. this is my current set up I’m thinking of getting. Idk if I should get another baitcaster or spinning reel. I like fishing with the Abu Garcia more but I want a combo thats versatile as in I can catch decent to big carp, bass or catfish and with. Would spinning combo or baitcaster be good and if baitcaster is this combo good? I’ve read reels are more important in freshwater fishing. Thank you.

I think $200 for both is the sweet spot. I’d rather have a better rod than reel though. A Shimano SLX XT is about as low as I would go. That new Daiwa Tatula X looks really nice for $150. I would go with a Cashion Element or a TFO Option Bass are good budget rods. A Daiwa Tatula XT or a Shimano SLX rod are going to be better than that Lews in my opinion too.

Reel. 100%. All my reels are about $180-$200 and my most expensive rod is $80. I’ve never had any issues with rods. I may buy brand like Abu Garcia, but I get Vengeance rather than Veritas and save $75 because they are actually nearly identical rods. Ugly Stick is the same. Their cheaper rods are exactly the same as their expensive ones.

Edit: I reread your post and absolutely ditch that rod and go with any brand (Lews makes them too) that’s about $50-$60 for a MH fast rod. I’ll let someone else speak on the reel since I only throw Abu 4600 and 5600 c3 and c4s. But from I’ve gathered here is that’s a good selection for the reel. 8.1 is a bit much for me. I’d probably like it for Texas rigging, but I prefer 6.3 or 7.1.

  3. I like my SLX 150HG 7.2. I paired mine with a Daiwa AIRX 7’3″MHF. It’s a 1 piece and very nice rod for the price. I think reels are more important.

I just got an SLX 7.2.1 $99 and a St. Croix BASS X 7’1″ Medium Heavy Fast action $125 and I absolutely love it. Coming from 7′ medium fast spinning rods so this setup can handle a much bigger fish. Look into it

  5. typically the rod is the one that helps cast further. I feel like it can depend on the situation, such as if you’re fishing saltwater, but I find that the rod matters more in freshwater. That’s just my opinion tho I might be wrong
