Do you guys think i should buy this penn pursuit 4 with the 5000 size reel with 20 pound mono mainline for jetty and pier fishing its a 7ft rod with a medium heavy action im kinda new to saltwater fishing and i want a strong pole for bigger sized fish like a 30 inch bull reds and just medium sized fish in general please let me know if i should pull the triger on it and get it or they is cheaper options that could get the same results im looking for

  1. The weight rating is really more about the size of lure or bait you’re throwing and less about the size of the fish.

    I haven’t caught a 30+ in a while but I caught several 28 and 29 last fall, with a medium action rod.
    I don’t fish jetties though.

    If you’re throwing 6oz Sputnik sinkers, you need something beefy.

    I’ve got a MH Penn Persuit w/4000 reel that’s great for shrimp and popping corks. It’s.the meat stick.

    I kinda work backwards.
    1a) decide where you’re fishing
    1b) decide what you’re fishing for

    These could switch places.

    2) find an effective bait/technique for those conditions

    3) pick the rod and reel that suits it
