Not sure if this is in the right sub but I was curious why dishes always congregate near the pier. Is it because people throw food there and they've become accustomed to being fed there?

  1. The pylons holding the pier up create structure- places that hold crabs, tiny baitfish, mussles, clams, barnacles. THat attracts bigger fish.

Piers create structure and food. Bringing small fish and crustaceans and things that eat them. But I have been to many places where the fish follow you for food too. Sharks and rays like to hang out at fish cutting stations…..

Piers are structure, often very deep and perfect for growing and attracting life. Most fisherman also don’t have boats, so a pier is an obvious spot to go.

  4. I just don’t think the scene would hit the same with two people fighting through bushes to get to the only piece of bank someone wasn’t already fishing on.

Lost bait as an additional source of food might have something to do with it but fish like structure, especially bait fish, and that probably has more to do with it. Also, a lot of time in big lakes and oceanfront areas fish will cruise the shoreline, looking to feed and inevitably will pass by the pier and find an anglers hook.
