As the title says is there anything he needs to look out for? or possibly test? His rod isn’t coming until next week.

As long as he’s getting a good deal should be fine. I would for sure strip the line and start fresh. If he knows what he’s doing (not complicated at all plenty of videos) id oil and grease it up before spooling new line. Assuming everything works as it should I wouldn’t worry about the cosmetics. If he’s only getting it for 20$ off id buy new
