I’ve been gifted a Penn Conflict Heavy rod, shimano sedona 5000 fitted with 17lb mono line. I’m a complete beginner, and have been gifted this cause I expressed my interest to start fishing. However now doing my own research it feels this is may be too heavy.
My fishing spots right now are limited to nearby rivers and lakes to learn on. Am I still able to target smaller fish with cheap baits and small lures? Or do I have no choice but to target heavier fish somewhere else? I don’t wanna have to sell/return my set up or buy a lighter rod
Also some advice on some beginner baits/lures/rigs to start out with. I just wanna catch something 😭
