What did I do wrong?

I was called an asshole after confusing this buffalo for a carp since I’ve never caught either until now, am I doing something wrong etiquette wise? He was hooked in the lip the line just went under his gill? I am new to fishing and I just want to do it right, thank you! (Posted this pic before in the group)
