Hey all,

So I will prefix it with: these are not used for fishing by me :). I dance in a group that does a traditional-ish Japanese dance called Yosakoi. Though part of it is of course the dancing there is also a part of the tradition that uses really big flags as part of the performance. Traditionally the Japanese used these poles converted from landing poles (dunno if that's the name) which at this point are these carbon mix poles that have differing amount of flex to them. The ones I use are 5 meters (a little over 16 feet) when extended, but we have ones that go to 7 meters (over 22 feet), and the flags are pretty big and many are heavy (double stitched). So as you can imagine these things tend to break after a ton of use, and it's been a PITA to find these in the US. The ones you see in the picture all come from Japan.

So my question is: what are these things called ("surf landing pole" is more or less the translation from the common Japanese names) and where can I find them in the US, if at all? They seem to make sense… you have a long rod with a long line and a big chonky fishy at the end of it and at some point you need a pole long enough to scoop it up and haul it on to your boat/pier/land/whatever. So why can't I find these? My guess is that I just don't know enough about fishing in the US to find what I'm looking for.

  1. These aren’t used in the US at all really unfortunately. Your best bet is probably going to be ordering from a Japanese shop and seeing what the shipping is. I know that Asian portal fishing has them and their shipping has always been reasonable.

You may be able to contact one of the variety of carbon extrusion manufacturers as well to get something a little better for the task, though that will be more expensive. I’ve worked with dragonplate and a few others with some of my research work and can recommend them if you are looking for something that would last longer.
