I was hoping to use this for some gar, but I don't know if theres anything I need to fix/improve. I really appreciate any help!

I’ve never gone for gar but my initial reaction to this is an enthusiastic “what in tarnation?”

This would work for gar. The hook is not there to catch them. The frayed rope is what catches them. Their teeth get tangled in the frayed rope

If you are going after big gar, I would ditch the jig head entirely and tie the rope straight to braid or heavy mono/floro with an inline weight. That hook on the jig head will be pulled straight by any fish over 4-5 lbs.
