I just got this new to me shimano scorpion mgl and am wondering what rod to get for it. I plan on using it for swim jigs and small swim baits.

  1. Budget? Check out the new Tatula XT rods. Or I also like Dobyns rods- a heavy Kaden would pair well.

Honestly though look for sales. I’ve never bought a rod full price- they’re heavily discounted often.

  2. 7’4″ Heavy power medium fast action, this is more meant for a chatterbait specifically but itll act as a nice filler option between swim jig and swim bait. The heavy power will give you enough muscle to handle medium sized swim baits and haul larger moving baits like spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. The medium fast will give you a more parabolic bending action which is good for moving baits wil swim jigs because fish tend to set the hook mostly themselvess. Trebles are easier for the fish to spit when the line slacks and a medium fast will also allow you to load into them more and keep them pinned. 7’4″ is a good length for your purposes but you could go up or down 2″ if you want.

As far as specifics, you have a shimano reel, may as well go with a shimano rod, the slx xt rod is about $99 and is a solid option, go with the sellus if you’re on a budget. Daiwa is good too, they have rods about the same price and quality, but I also like Ark rods, very good quality, especially their budget stuff

Swim jig is a single hook and typically want a faster action, while swimbaits typically have treble hooks and want a more moderate action….

Swim jigs i prefer a med hvy fast action. Lure weight 1/4-1oz or 3/4 should work well but if you mostly plan to use lures under 3/8oz get a medium power Fast action. A big part of the castability from a baitcaster is making sure the rod and lure weight being matched. If you try and cast a 3/16 oz jig with a rod meant to throw 1/4 oz and up chances are you’ll backlash or not be able to cast it very far.
