I was fishing from the dock at my pond yesterday afternoon, and all I caught were two little bluegill on a beetle spin.
It was getting late, so I decided to try out my kayak for only the second time. All I took was the small pink worm pictured with no weight. I paddled to a different part of the pond, and I'm not exaggerating,
every single time I cast towards the bank I got a huge bite! They even bit the tail off the worm and still kept biting it!
Unfortunately, I couldn't hook even one, and I don't know why. I tried yanking it at the first bump, and waited as long as five bumps before I tried to set the hook and I got nothing. I was so excited, but that turned into massive frustration, and I quit. The sun was about to set anyway. It was about 7pm when I first started. I would estimate I got thirty good bites in less than an hour!
So what the hell happened? Was my hook too big or too small or not rigged properly? I think the worm was only 4 inches. The hook was a Tru Turn, probably 4 or 5. When should I set the hook? They kept biting it but I never could hook them – Not a single one!
I'm dying to go back, but I know I need to try something different. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?? Thanks!
