Thursday I fished the Yakima River near Cle Elum.
On a sink trip line with an olive & rust streamer, in a deep hole where I have caught large trout before, came . . . a hatchery chinook salmon! From the mouth of the Columbia all the way to Cle Elum – what, 400 miles?
Hooked fair in the upper jaw (fly is visible in pic) and the take felt just like a big trout. There was no way this one was going to fit in my net, but I beached and released him as gently as possible.
I got a couple rainbows on nymphs, plus a tiny something.
