Hey y’all, I’m just starting to get back into fly fishing after a long family need driven hiatus. When I was younger I used to fish “blue lines” and special regulation areas for wild trout in VA between Lexington and Roanoke.
I now live in Charlotte, NC and would love any information you’re willing to share for western NC. Definitely prefer wild fish to the naive delayed harvest stockers. I don’t have the time to get out week after week scouting streams like I did in my 20s. I won’t fish out your spots either as I never keep trout.
Hoping for some ideas east of GSMNP to save on some drive time. If anyone wants to link up for some fishing and doesn’t mind hanging out for the day with a 50yo I’m down to drive and spring for lunch in exchange for some location knowledge.
I’m a decent fisherman with all my own equipment so no need for babysitting, or having to provide equipment. Hell, if you run into an equipment issue I’m happy to lend you some of mine for the day- I’ve got multiple trout rods rigged and ready to go.
Pic tax included – had a fantastic day on the Doe river headwaters a couple weeks ago. This one was one of the larger fish I caught.

I’m Greensboro, NC based and usually pop up to the Smith in southern VA, some nice tailwaters below the Philpott dam. I usually pull a couple nice sized browns on any given outing, hoppers are dynamite. Feel free to DM if you want some scouting reports or want to link up to fish it. Couple cigars and a handle of bourbon covering that water is as sublime as it gets!
