What am I doing wrong what flys should I try and am I better off just using the trusty ole bread ball on a small hook

Carp spook so easily. If you’re crashing your line on the water they will notice and not bite. You need to be like a ninja for them and not let yourself get seen as in all my experiences they seem to have good vision

  2. Presentation over pattern.

They aren’t that hard so much as wired very differently than just about any other freshwater fish you’d throw a fly at.

Learn how to drag and drop.

  3. It gets easier…I spent so much time trying to catch my first on fly. Get to know your fisheries and figure out what works. If it’s tough in one place try another and the best thing is that they are everywhere.

You will find that some places are easier than others. However, over time you will learn more about how carp behave, and you can reliably catch them. Just don’t get caught up trying to catch them in one single fishery. There are places I go and beat them up, and places I still haven’t had good shots at or spooked them every time.

  4. They’ll eat whatever. The key is getting it to within a dinner plate size target in front of their face without them notice you, your line, leader, your hopes, or dreams hahaha good luck! They are usually densely populated wherever you fish for them. So you generally get several shots in a day. Try different flies, leaders, and stick to what you enjoy! It’s all about the pursuit!
