Hey, i am new into fishing and did my license a few weeks ago. I started using my dads old fishing gear which are cheap fishing rod combo almost 15 years old, if not more. They are like 20-40g and 20-50g rods and i used them a couple of times. I did not catch anything to be honest till now (went fishing 4 times). I taught about getting a gear that i can use everywhere in switzerland. We do not have saltwater and also none of my friends ever catched a pike that is more than 50-60cm.
So with the help of chatgpt i studied a bit about rods and everything and came to the conclusion of getting somewhat in the range of light-medium like class. My friends say i should go ultra light and with lureweight of around 3-15g, i taught maybe something like 5-25g. We mainly have perches, trout and pikes in our lakes, which must be 30cm min. for perch or 50cm minimum for pike and trout to take them home.

My question is? How is this combo od the pictures, would this be a great starter to fish like 2-3 times a month. Or should i stick with the old rods of my dad and my technique is the problem?

Fishing rod:
Westin W2 Finesse Jig – Spinn
248cm 7-28g
Fishing roll:
Shimano Catana FE
2500 size

Thanks for any help 🙂

  1. I’d probably swap out the Catana with a Sienna. I have both and the Sienna is noticeably smoother.

I’d go with a medium rod with fast action if you’re only going to buy one rod.
