I've never used a baitcaster but am looking to learn. This combo rod and reel caught my eye–I'm mostly curious if the reel is going to be decent.
Any reason I should avoid this combo? Or any particular reel with a great reputation (e.g. I'm a sucker for the Shimano Sedona spinning reels for their quality/value)?

I recently purchased a Shimano Curado DC as my first casting reel and although there is still a significant learning curve it was reduced by the digitally controlled brake system. The SLX is less expensive with the same tech.

That is a great combo to start out on absolutely, set the tension according to manufacturers spec and go from there
That’s a great combo. If you set the tension and brakes up correctly, it will be a fairly short learning curve. Spool it up with 12 pound Berkeley Big Game monofilament, and get a 1/2 oz practice plug. Learn how to let the rod load up and do the work on the cast. After you make all your mistakes and get some confidence on the cheap Big Game line, you can use what’s left as backing for a quality fluorocarbon line.
