I was testing out my brand new Spook on my MH 12 Pound mono setup for some bass, and this thing slammed it after a boat wake went by
needless to say it felt like a gut punch, since it woulda been my first Muskie ever. I know this is a bass sub, but anything I coulda done better?

That’s what you get for trying to horse them over….. Heartache 95% of the time. Constant pressure, let the drag and bend of the rod do it’s job. I’ve learned this too, the hard way….

  2. If anything just back the drag off a quarter to half turn and just let the fish do its thing. You were panicking so badly and got punished for it. Just keep the rod loaded and let it do the work for you.

  3. To all the comments, yes I am inexperienced with bigger fish: the my biggest fish was a 6 pound bass, so I had no idea how to deal with this one 😭 Lesson learned! đŸ«Ą

That was your owe fault loosing that fish. You played with the drag too much.. lesson learned

  6. I just kind of did the same thing. I just caught a bass in a pond I have been trying to catch a 7 pounder I caught last year. I tightened my drag a little after catching a 2 pounder. Big mistake. I finally hooked her a few casts later. Drag was too tight. Before I could get to it, she broke my line. I lost her and my $20 jack hammer. I’m still crying a week later.

That sucks man. I did the same last weekend. Must’ve been at least 5 pounds. Could’ve put my hand in its mouth. Broke my line right against the boat when I went to grab his lip.

  8. Don’t tighten your drag until you are about to lose every bit of line on your spool. Every time that fish would dart 3-4 feet you kept tightening the drag. Sometimes you gotta let a big fish run for 10,20,30 seconds straight. As long as you’re not about to run out of line, let it keep tiring itself out.

One of the bigger lessons in fishing game species.

The “pre-bite” patience is relatively easy to learn. After all, this is what people mean when they talk about fishing requiring patience, right?

But then you have to learn that the patience requirement doesn’t end at the bite. Took me several failed hook-sets to realize I needed to be patient here, rather than yanking the bait right out of the fishes mouth at soon as I felt it hit.

Then came the lesson you just learned. Gotta be patient in the fight as well, my friend.

  10. This looks like a pike to me
you’ll need a steel leader or braid line
mono won’t cut it. (Pun intended)
