Could someone possibly give me a quick rundown of what gear ratios mean for baitcasters and what gear ratio is best for different lures? I have this rod and reel (7.5:1) and I love the way it feels throwing something like a whopper plopper on it. Thanks!

7.5 inches per turn of the handle. The bigger the number the faster the reel will take up line. A lot of guys go with a slower ratio 5.6-1 to slow down while crank baiting.

any 7 speed gear ratio can work for most techniques. Faster (8-10:1) can be good for something like a buzzbait or a frog where you’re reeling fast or taking up lots of line, and slower can be good for slow retrieving something like a big Colorado blade spinnerbait in cold water (5 or 6 speed). 7.5 DOES NOT refer to inches per turn, it is how many times the spool fully rotates per crank of the handle. Inches per turn on a 7 speed is usually around 28-32″ and is a good general purpose gear ratio, I would only consider a higher or lower one if you are looking to buy technique specific combos.
