I can pick up a Shimano Ultegra for a GREAT price, supposedly brand new, but seems too good to be true. Are there counterfeit reels? How can I know for sure if it's real when I see it in person? These are the photos provided.

I would be extremely surprised if the ultrgra was copied being a lower middle tier reel.

Counterfeit reels do exist, but I’d be surprised if counterfeit Ultegras exist. I’m pretty sure only the higher end stuff has fakes made of it, like curado / stradic and up

Is the price that far off? If it’s an unbelievably good deal… you probably shouldn’t believe it.
A common scam is to sell something under brand name photos at %5 of retail cost, then the scammer will send an item that is an absolutely blatant counterfeit.
Saw it happen a few weeks ago in an aquarium sub where someone bought a $15 refrigerated water chiller, the photos were the same as a $350 model from the real brands’ website

Looks like it’s the older model, the newer ones have a different spool, new ones look to have only the one dark band on the spool, old ones have two.
New model was only released in May from memory.

Counterfeiting items are usually done with higher end items because the profit margins are a lot better but many current reels are just subtle copies of other brands.
Very few are actually individually designed from the ground up without copying the competition as it were.

yes but i doubt it’s a counterfeit, shimano jsut came o it with their new line of ultegras (i have one and it’s amazing) so most retailers are gonna discount old reel stock to make room for new reels.
