I bought a new Diawa reel as seen in the picture. I am not new to fishing or spinning reels. I was putting new 10lb J-braid on (based on recommendations here) and noticed it was piling the line towards the front of the spool. I took it off and tried two more times. After looking closer, the spool doesn’t move when under tension. When not under tension, it seems fine. This reel has never been used. Any ideas? I emailed Diawa.

  1. Unsure what you mean specifically when you say the reel does or doesn’t move, but that photo looks like the braid isn’t under enough tension when being reeled onto the spool.

Also I believe Diawa designs their spinning reels to be a bit top heavy with line lay, they claim it casts better that way.

  2. Need to add a shim.

Otherwise – Daiwa commonly makes their reels to spool too heavy, that’s what they think is best.

IMO I like it to lay flat. Also your line needs to be put on with a decent amount of tension, that’s why the line is biting into itself.

  3. I may not be understand, but is your line slipping on the reel? It’s common with braid for the line to rotate and not the spool if you don’t have tape or a grippier backer.

  4. Need to add one or two of the small washers in the box to fix the line lay, not sure what your other issue is by the description you gave tho, maybe take it to a shop?
