ended up grabbing the flatside special. thank you to those who weighed in on my previous post here.

have tied a uni to uni connection on my spinning setup for a few months now with great success. this unfortunately does not appear to be cutting it with 40 lb braid to 20 lb flouro on my new casting rod.

seeing that the uni to uni was too bulky, i've experimented with a few knots. i like the alberto and find it easy to tie, but was wondering if you all think it will be slim / low profile enough to cast throuth my new orochi xx flatside special? any input is appreciated. have only used a casting setup with straight flouro. dealing with a knot passing through these small guides is a new challenge for me.

  1. Don’t use a leader for top water. Also learn the FG knot if you’re trying to tie a 20lb leader to 40lb braid. Every other knot I know of is too thick for those lines to pass thru small guides.

Alberto knot is a great bet. I like the fg knot the best but the Alberto is great and easy to learn

If you want the best performance, might as well put the time in now and learn the FG knot. Best through the guides, best knot strength, best cast.

FG is the only leader knot, for real. Check out the Salt Strong pinkie method to hold tension and then watch the Briggsy rizzuto finish method for best the locking knot. Once you’re comfortable tying it you will never go back to anything else. I’ve caught 80+ lb tuna on an FG, it’s so strong, simple and so easy once you get the hang of it.
