2nd cast.. Gets slammed.. A fish I never seen before lol.. I’m like this is clearly not a bass and I have no idea what it is.

Chain pickerel? Hard to tell without seeing the side, but the mouth profile looks like pickerel or pike to me.

Looks like a small Muskie

In VA most likely chain pickerel. I’ve been catching a few of them lately.

Something from the Esox family. Pickerel/pike/muskie.
These things are the best ambush predators on the planet and it’s not even close. They have binocular vision, iron sights built into their skull to aim at target fish, and they can accelerate at 245 m/s^2 (25 g).

Thanks for the quick responses! I like to target bass because they don’t have teeth lol. Removing the hook was fun 😅

Chain pickerel, a good sign is the black “teardrop” below its eye

Clearly not a bass, why isn’t it asked in r/fishing

Thumb it. Youll only do it once. 😂

Northern Pike

Definitely chain pickerel. VA wouldn’t list them on that species to target list. If you are really curious get in touch with them and ask to talk to a biologist.

That’s a chain pickerel and you’re in Virginia!

You can make out a faint chain pattern on its side so im gonna say chain picklefish!
