So I just set up a brand, new rod and reel.
Daiwa Tatula XT Medium Power – Fast Action Rod 7’
Paired with Daiwa Regal LT 2500

First day out I had a lot of issues. Wind knots when I was casting, and spooling around the bottom of the reel.

So I just hooked up my line to a telephone pole and pulled it all out and reeled it back in with tension. This is the appearance of it pictured.

Question # 1 : Is it over spooled ?

Question #2 : is the Line Lay OK or should I add a washer? (Line favoring the top side)

Question #3 : are the problems I listed a line lay / spooling issue or related to the rod or reel itself?

  1. It’s a little bit overspooled, you could probably stand to pull off 10-20yds. That (along with not keeping adequate tension on the line during your retrieve) is almost certainly what caused the problems you described.

Line lay is not an issue, these Daiwa reels are intended to lay more line at the top. No need to mess with washers
