Hi y’all. Just went fly fishing for the first time this past week and can’t stop thinking about it. For work i’m on the road alllll the time, mainly in the center of NC/SC areas. It’s unpredictable where i’m sent for work. I want to keep a rod in my car for future fishing oppurtunities. Would you recommend this Redington kit for an all around kit? For a newbie? What are some essentials I should keep in my car for ol reliables? Any insight is great, thank you

If you keep your stuff in your car in the summer be aware the heat will cause your leader and tippet to become brittle.

  2. Yes. Not a bad setup until you get comfortable and want to upgrade. Assuming you are going for trout I’d grab a 5wt to start with. Enjoy!

  3. Perfect beginner rod/reel combo. I have several Redington rods/reels. My first ‘nice’ rod/reel was a Redington Crosswater! 5wt is a great general purpose size.

  4. It’s decent enough to get you fishing but the plastic reel sucks. Likely would be the first upgrade. That and some leader, tippet, a fly set, some snips, and maybe some split shot/floats would be enough.

Great starter setup. That’s what I got my youngest to get into it with. Fun to cast, a little stiffer than some 5Wt and like others have said the reel is plastic, but it does its job. The drag on the reel sucks, but you could run it to figure out if you’re gonna make this a hobby.

  6. This is a great starter set up! I got the cross water 11 years ago as my first fly rod/ reel. I’ve broken it twice, replaced the rod once, now own much nicer and more expensive set ups. But still find myself fishing that rod every summer, where it be with younger kids, or faster water from boats. Highly recommend.
