I mostly saltwater fly fish in the bays and beaches of Texas but also get to fish the Rockies as well as the Andes occasionally. Hope to learn a few things here. I have been making fishing rods for about 35 years and started with fly rods but I do a lot of baitcasters and a few spinning as well as offshore / nearshore. The pic is about a 5 lbs+ speckled trout I caught in the surf here. It was on a TFO BVK 8wt, 9', 4 pc blank that I built out with Fuji Torzite KW strippers and REC double foot snakes and tip top. I tie my own flies and buy a few for fresh water but also tie them to. Most of the blanks I am using currently are North Fork Composite (NFC). They pick up line a little better than the TFO ones and I would compare them to G. Loomis NRX type ones. I release the large fish I catch, like this one, and keep a few smaller, tasty ones, that I can eat in just the next few days. I don't like them frozen. Not trying to sell anything, just want to let you know where I come from. I also like good bourbon and that seems like it may be a prerequisite to posting here. Anyway, Hello!

  1. Welcome. Always nice to see some salt water fly fishermen! Never have but one day I will. I enjoy seeing the variety and size! Cheers!

  2. No offense but if you’ve been fishing for that long you should know that holding a fish you plan to release by the gills can/will kill the fish.

  3. Hell yeah. If you like a good bourbon you should stop by the fly trap and talk to Kevin. They’re generous with the garrison brothers for sure.
