I’ve put a few different lines on here and I’ve had a bit of trouble casting it. I’ve used mono and braid, and it actually bombed 3/8 bass jigs with trailers. But it is inconsistent, I backlashed the helm out of it and I just can’t seem to get it dialed. It only has one adjustment knob which makes me believe it might be for trolling.

It’s a hand me down from my wife’s grandpa and I’d really like to find a use for it. I’m considering putting 30, 40, or 50 lb braid on it and using it to float fish for steelhead with 5/8 oz rigs (5/8 because it falls in the parameter of the rod I have it paired with). My theory is that it will be easier to cast a heavier setup with it and I won’t backlash as much.

I appreciate any input, knowledge, etc from people who have used this reel. Thanks.

  1. That is a lovely casting reel. I use mine for heavier rigs, but someone else can speak to the lighter end. Practice with it and tweak it until it’s set up correctly

You CAN troll with it but it is one of the nicest baitcasters ever made.

Production on Swedish built Ambassadeurs stops this year by the way.

Yes, you can float fish with it.

I JUST tuned an identical 4601 (it’s narrower) for exactly that purpose.

    Cheers!

  3. I run a virtually identical Abu for float fishing salmon and steelhead here in BC, paired with a 10’6” casting rod. Works great for everything from pinks and Steelies to chum and chinook.
