My brother has this Pearl gourami with this tail lump. I've cycled a small tank for a hospital and will be taking him(her?) home tomorrow. He swims and eats just fine but slowly and keeps out of the way of the other fish. He's at least six years old and has long outlived his mate.

It's a very overstocked tank (sorting that this week) with plecos, featherfins and other catfish, barbs and cories. I expect I'll be keeping him anyway if he survives so he can have a peaceful retirement.

Any advice on treatment, medication to buy etc? Or whether it's a growth or some kind or injury? The tank appears miraculously peaceful but some of the fish are huge and flighty.
