For most of my fish dispatching I have been just using my filet knife to go just behind the skull to hit the brain, but on my last outing I had noticed that doing this repeatedly had dulled my knife before getting to removing the guts. I've seen the ikejime kits with the spike and wire for sale, as well as other ice pick like spikes. But after looking at them I thought why not just use an old tire repair spike I have laying round? I know it's not exactly the same but a spike is a spike right?

Has anyone else ever tried to make their own ikejime spike? Or ever used another tool from around your home in its place? Are the actual ikejime spikes worth the $10-$40? Or is it just a glorified ice pick?
