Follow up to original post. Some sample weights of various flies. Notice three similar looking midge patters, but differing weights. This helps to explain why I wanted to weigh all my flies – you cannot tell from looking how much a given fly might weigh. Weight categories/boxes range from under .025 oz to over .9 oz

I understand the comment that sink rate would be better than actual weight to gauge how fast a fly might sink, but if I look at two flies that weigh relatively the same, and one has no hackle nor dubbing and the other does, I can deduce which will sink faster by design.

Some of the flies shown: midge, copper john, hare's ear, perdigon, RS2, classic wet, stone, worm, prince.

Hope this has some value.
